Ep 1 2

Lucy and her zoo animal friends.

The Zoo is the main setting in the animated series 64 Zoo Lane. It is the place where Lucy meets her friends, the zoo animals, who share stories with her every night.

Background[]

Theme 23

The entrance of the zoo featuring Nelson and Georgina outside.

Hence its name, the zoo is a facility containing a collection of various species of animals such as giraffes, elephants, bears, hippos, and many other species. The zoo eventually lives in a street named after it called "64 Zoo Lane", which is the series' titular setting. The only area of the zoo seen throughout the series is a wide outdoor exhibit where animals live together, and thus, not much of the zoo itself is explored. In addition to this area where the animals are gathered to talk to Lucy, the zoo is also filled with green shrubbery and cages (albeit many of them empty) in the background. Next to the zoo itself is a house where Georgina would knock on Lucy's window so that she would meet the animals, usually in occasions when they want to talk to Lucy and that they would share their stories with her. After a story was finished, Lucy would be told a moral of what the story is all about or make a reaction to the story the animals taught her, followed by Georgina bringing Lucy back to bed.

The entrance of the zoo seen in the last shot of the opening theme features an entry gate and located on the front entrance of the facility is the word "Zoo" written in all caps. Nelson and Georgina usually appear in standing in front of the entrance awake in this scene just before the episode's title would appear. During the end credits after Lucy sleeps in bed at the end of each episode, it shows the same position where Nelson and Georgina are standing, but are seen sleeping; this shows that it is bedtime not just for Lucy but to all the animals as well, as indicated by the two with their eyes closed.

Trivia[]

  • The zoo has appeared in every single episode of 64 Zoo Lane, making it the only location to appear in every episode, not counting books or related media.
  • It is unknown of how the animals at the zoo gained the ability to talk to humans such as Lucy in the first place.
  • Due to the fact that there are no other human characters visible in the series aside from Lucy arriving at the zoo grounds itself, it is unknown who owns the zoo or if there are any staff members (zookeepers, janitors, etc.) who work at the zoo.
  • Given the fact that there are no other visitors present at the zoo at night besides Lucy could indicate that the zoo closes at night and is open during daytime hours. Despite this, some real-life zoos that normally operate business hours during the daytime are open during night hours for visitors during certain nighttime events such as the San Diego Zoo's summer event Nighttime Zoo or the Living Desert's illuminated lantern park event Glow in the Park, unlike the zoo featured in 64 Zoo Lane.
  • The exact location of the zoo (especially the area it is located within) is unknown. However, according to An Vrombaut, the zoo was inspired by a real-life zoo known as the Antwerp Zoo in Belgium.[1] Additionally, the exact location of the street where the zoo is located is also unknown.
